OFFSHORE: Action offshore was a bit slow this week, but some southernly winds in the forecast should help push some dolphin up the coast. The best dolphin reports this week have come in 500-1000' of water from Palm Beach to Jupiter Inlets. Trolling squid have been the hot bait for the mahi this week, though it is not likely they would turn down a bonita strip or ballyhoo dragged by them either. Current rips, large areas of baits (look for flying fish getting up, and large bait balls on the sonar), and weed lines are great areas to start the search for the dolphin. Blackfin tuna are around in good numbers. Trolling small squid skirts (4.25" Yo-Zuri Skirt with a 1/2oz egg sinker and 6/0 hook) is a great way to catch the smaller blackfin, while live sardines fished 10-20' below the surface are the way to go for the bigger ones. Kingfish action has remained solid along the 120' ledge. Live sardines are the bait of choice for the kings, and will also catch all kinds of other good by catch as well. While a kingfish bite is likely; you never know when a solid blackfin, cobia, mutton snapper, or sailfish is going to grab your sardine. Snapper fishing has remained good this week, with some solid mutton snapper reports coming in from the Jupiter Inlet drift boats.
INSHORE: Snook fishing has remained good this week, and should improve right on through the end of the season. The snook are making their way towards the inlets, and eating heavily as they do. Best bet on the snook remains area bridges at night on the outgoing tide. Big baits are still getting bites, so don't be afraid to chunk the big stuff. Flair hawk style jigs, swim baits, and big lipped plugs are all good choices now; as are live mullet. Daytime action on the snook is a little tough. If nighttime snook fishing doesn't work for you, be sure to fish low light periods of the day for best chance at banging a snook. Some nice jacks cruising the ICW right now for those looking to pull on some hard fighters. A few reports of some tarpon hanging around Palm Beach Inlet's south jetty. SURF/PIER: Looks like we are coming close to the end of pompano season, but it's not over just yet. Still a few pompano being caught north of Jupiter Inlet, especially during low light conditions or days the wind blows up a little cloudy water. Sandfleas, clams, and fresh cut shrimp are good bait choices right now. The Juno Beach Fishing Pier has also been picking away at some late season pompano. The pier is also producing a few slot size snook. Live shrimp and fresh dead stomped baits seem to be getting the most bites out of the snook. Croaker are biting small live shrimp or pieces of fresh shrimp in the first trough. Scattered schools of big jacks cruising the beaches. Snook are starting to move in to the summertime hangouts and I was able to convince a few to bite with a little work and patience. The moonfish have also been in the inlet fairly well, and are a lot of fun to try and trick with light tackle and small jigs.
