Another weekend is sneaking up on us quickly. Lots of good stuff going on at the shop this week, sorry that the fishing report/outlook is a little late. Nice looking weather weekend coming up, better get out and take advantage of it!
OFFSHORE- March is here, and "springtime" patterns are starting to set in. Sailfish are still hanging around, and decent catches should come in this weekend with some north winds in the forecast. The sails this week have been spread out from 100-300' of water. Mixed in with the sails have been a few dolphin. Not much to report on the dolphin way offshore. Save the gas and stay inshore (inside of 200') for more consistent action. The kingfish are starting to show up inside of a 100' off Jupiter Inlet. Drifting triple hooked sardines or ballyhoo is a great simple way to get the king mackerel fired up. Underneath the kingfish will be some nice mutton snapper. Yellowtail snapper fishing has been good inside of 80' of water. Bottom fishing remains the best game in town. A box or two of sardines, some squid, slide rigs, and your in business. The area from Juno Pier to Jupiter Inlet is filled with great spots in 60-100' of water. Don't rely solely on old spots, keep trying new spots and depths till the fish really start to bite! INSHORE- Snook fishing has steadily improved over the past few weeks. Lots of good snook reports from those spending the time fishing. Action will continue to remain better at night around bridges with good current. Trout are still hanging around Munyon Island. Drifting live shrimp, DOA Shrimp, or other soft plastic lures under a popping cork is a good way to get the trout fired up. The Hobe Sound flats are still holding good quantities of assorted fish. Lots of jacks, ladyfish,snook, and even a few small tarpon are cruising the flats; especially early morning. Black drum have also been reported around bridges in northern Palm Beach County. SURF/PIER- Happy to report that pompano action has finally started to improve along Juno/Jupiter Beach. Fish early morning or late afternoon for best luck. Sandfleas and clams have remained the hot baits for the pompano. Spanish Mackerel are still biting good at Peck's Lake. Spinner shark action along the beach remains very good. A nice chunk of fresh bait is the key for the spinners. Whiting fishing has been very good for those looking for a tasty easy meal! BAIT REPORT- GOOD NEWS!!! It is a little early,but the sardines have already started to show up. The usual bait spots are starting to hold some bait. Not big numbers yet, but it is nice to see some baits show up so early. OFFSHORE- The sailfish remained the main game in town this week, with many boats seeing three to four sails a day. Capt. Byron Thomas (http://thomasfishingventures.com/) reported seeing good numbers of sailfish from south of PB Inlet up to Lost Tree Village in 100-160' of water, in with the sails have been scattered dolphin and kingfish. LIvebaiting with goggle eyes and blue runners along the edge is still the best bet for a good variety of action. Under the kingfish have been some nice size mutton snapper looking for an easy meal. Try sliding a sardine down to the bottom, and don't be surprised if a nice mutton snapper ends up getting invited home for dinner! Our friend Capt. Jack Porcelli (http://www.captainjacksfishingcharters.com/) had a couple of nice cobia this week as well. Jupiter drift fishing is improving as well. Capt. Howard Tuttle (http://www.redbeardfishingcharters.com/) had a nice mixed bag this week of kingfish and snapper. The fish are around...it just takes a little work to find them. SURF/PIER- Spinner shark season is in full swing right now. The spinners tend to bite good, fight hard, and are loads of fun on light tackle. Capt. James Knox (http://fishcastings.com/) had five spinners this morning, including a few multiple hookups. Spanish Mackerel action at Peck's Lake remains strong, and some scattered schools of macs can be found along the beach as well. Still very scattered action on the pompano. Spending time on the beach right now and soaking bait is what it takes to catch the pomps. This is kind of the "Link" edition of the fishing report. OFFSHORE- The fishing was a little on the slow side most of the week. Friday and Saturday look to be on the rougher side, but Sunday as of now looks like ideal conditions. Sunday, as of now, has lighter NE winds and 2-3' seas in the forecast. The sailfish and dolphin, which bit good last weekend, all but vanished for the most part this week. The best news was the showing of some BIG kingfish. Kings in the fifty pound range were caught north of Palm Beach Inlet. Fishing live goggle eyes and blue runners seemed to produce the most bites from the kingfish. Snapper fishing remained fair most of the week. Capt. Eric (http://www.freighttrainfishing.com/) caught a few snapper on his afternoon trip Thursday, but they did have to deal with an almost 4 knot current. Don't forget grouper season is currently closed. It hurts to let a big fat keeper grouper go, but the fine for getting caught with a grouper out of season will hurt even more. While the fishing was slow this week, I fully expect this weekend to produce some nice fishing! INSHORE- Snook fishing improved a little this week. The full moon will have the snook bite slower during the day, but the night bite should be good. Bridges with deeper channels and strong current will be the spots to fish. The snook are not clicked over into spring mode yet, so they are moving a little slow. Fish your jigs and swimbaits slower and near the bottom for the best results. The flats around Munyon Island were still holding some fish this week. Scattered snook, trout, jacks, and ladyfish made up the bulk of the action. Topwater lures early in the morning and DOA shrimp during the day are great bait choices. Flats fishing reports up north (Ft. PIerce especially) have been very good for anybody looking to make the drive. SURF/PIER- Large schools of glass minnows invaded the surf from Jupiter to Palm Beach Inlets this week. WIth the massive schools of baits came a whole host of fish. Loads of Jacks, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, scattered snook, and Spinner Sharks came in with the Glass Minnows. Small spoons and Gotcha lures are great choices for the bluefish, mackerel, and jacks. Best baits for the spinner sharks are live baits or fresh chunks of bait. (For an exciting charter consider going kite fishing for spinner sharks. Crazy bites on top, and the acrobatics of the spinners on light tackle make them great fun. Our friend Capt. James http://fishcastings.com/ is great at catching the spinner sharks along the beach) The Jupiter Inlet had a pile of birds working along the north jetty this morning. Hard to see what was under them, but my guess is some bluefish or spanish mackerel were hanging around. Jupiter beach (around Civic Center) had some birds working as well. Saw a few spinner sharks working the same area. Looks like the surf fishing is trying to improve.
AFTERNOON Update- Still lots of bait on the beach just to the north of Jupiter Inlet. Looks like mostly big schools of glass minnows. Keep your lures on the small side for the best results. Should be plenty of spanish mackerel, jacks, bluefish, and ladyfish around to catch. And if your looking for something bigger, the sharks won't be far behind! Just good word from Capt. James at http://fishcastings.com/ that the dolphin are biting good this morning. They had five nice ones off Juno Beach between 150-200' of water on live baits. The sailfish are biting again today as well, with most of the fish being caught from Jupiter Inlet and north. The kingfish remain scattered in on the shallow reefs, with some nice ones coming in as shallow as 70' of water off Palm Beach. The bigger mutton snapper seem to be hanging out a little shallow as well currently . Not many reports on the inshore side of things this weekend. Capt.
